Drums export?

Postby uncle808us » 27 Jun 2014, 18:47

How do you get Looptical to export the drum track to channel 10 in a .mid file? Also which Drum set is set up to the GM mapping for a standard drum kit?

You cannot set the MIDI track channel for a track in Looptical, so you would have to assign it to channel 10 in your external DAW application.

There is no GM drum instrument, due to the large number of samples it would require, and especially if we were to try to include different musical genres of drums. However, you can set the MIDI note number for each of the 12 pads in a drum instrument, so you can set them to the equivalent on your DAW (eg. hihat closed). If you need more than 12 drums in the one track then you can create a Keys instrument, and then map a drum instrument to as many keys as you want. You could even sample your DAW's drum kit across all the keys and make your own Looptical instrument out of it.

In Setup / MIDI / Note Mappings, you can set the MIDI note number triggered by each of the 12 drum pads. You could assign one pad to correspond to the note to trigger the Kick Drum on your DAW, another for the Snare etc. The simplest thing would be to take an existing drum instrument that has similar sounds and use that to create your tune, and when you export the MIDI then (if you set up the MIDI mappings correctly) you would still hear a kick drum, but it would now be the DAW kick drum and not the Looptical one.
You could also sample the drums from your DAW and create an Pad instrument in Looptical, so that when you press a pad labelled "Kick Drum" then it makes an identical kick drum sound to your DAW, and also sends the correct note via MIDI to the DAW to trigger the kick drum.
In this way you could write some music on the move with Looptical, and then export the MIDI when back at home, and the drum track would sound identical (or at least "similar").
If you wanted more than 12 drums in a drum track then you could create a Looptical Keyboard instrument and sample all 127 keys of your DAW drum instrument.
Or, of course, have multiple drum tracks in Looptical, each mapped to a different 12 drum sounds / MIDI keys.
The process of sampling an external instrument such as a DAW, splitting up the sample, importing that into Looptical, and creating a new Looptical instrument is unfortunately not a topic I can go into huge depth here. However, there is a lot of information on creating Looptical instruments in the instruction manual.
